Meet and have a jam with the musicians of Shekhawati or sit back to appreciate real artistes in colourful costumes perform age old folk dances. Spend your evening with local percussionists (maestros of the chang and derun).
The derun players of Shekhawati dance and strike a small twin-faced drum made with tightly stretched goat gut while singing songs of Gogaji the snake god. The members of this community are mendicants who used to cure the effects of a snake bite. But their trade is threatened by the onslaught of modern veterinary practices. Another with its typical music is the bhopa community – whose practice of invoking the healing powers of Pabuji, god of camels and horses through an all-night recitation of his epic story is now shrinking.
